A GOOD playing horn…YES it is true a few Overseas made horns do play well! This is a NICE playing cornet for a student or comeback player that needs a lighter and smaller horn to practice with!!!
This is a nice cornet and a good quality instrument by one of the Largest Brass makers in Taiwan. Made as E. M. Winston of Boston this is a good student model cornet. This was bought in 2010 new and has been used as a rental ever since. A large East Coast music store sold it to me with a batch of their rental horns during Covid since they weren’t renting at the time. I was going to part it out but it played pretty well even though it looked totally beat to death. The body and slides had a lot of wear with a load of dents and broken solder joints. The horn was ultrasonic cleaned and then it was stripped of the remaining lacquer. I fixed the joints and worked out all the larger dents and bends. I did the Satin blast finish and applied a coat of clear lacquer to protect the new finish. I lapped the valves and aligned them to maximize the air flow. I played it while doing the work and it is a very nice sounding cornet. I think that this horn has a cool look with a Cupro-Nickel lead pipe and a Shepherd’s crook bell and plays pretty well (Melanie said I sound great on this horn, lol, as always). The horn has a nice smooth and compact sound. It plays well from below the staff to well above it. The intonation is pretty good and the small 4 5/8” bell projects the sound well so you can use it in a close environment. It's in great mechanical condition - all the tuning slides work smoothly, including the first and third which are usually frozen and require some kind of repair. There are NO missing pull-tabs on the slides (rare in a used horn). The valves work freely and smoothly and return back into place with ease. The valves also have new felts on the tops and inside to align them. There is very slight wear on them and they are fast and have good compression. There are also new corks on the spit valves. There are no large dents in any of the tubing and as we said earlier, just a few tiny dents and pits from normal wear that we felt don’t affect the sound or looks. The bell is in nice shape and has a great look with the crook. The defects are very hard to see unless you are close to the horn and from 5 feet away the horn looks new. This cornet comes with a standard cornet mouthpiece, which is in very good shape. You will need to find a gig bag since I didn’t have a Shepherd’s crook case to match it with. This is your chance – there are lots of poor quality trumpets made in India and China that play terribly. Why buy one of those for 9.00 or more or spend upwards of 00 for a conventional cornet (the student model Yamaha YCR23XX now goes for over 00) when you can pick this up for a lot less than that? These horns sell for over 0 with no adjustments done to them. This one has already been tweaked and is ready to play today! Take a look...it’s a great horn for a student or comeback player.
