    EAST INDIAMAN
    HOLLANDIA
WAS BUILT WITH A NEW DESIGN FOR THE AMSTERDAM CHAMBER IN 1742. SHE BOASTED 32 GUNS AND WAS 700 TONS WITH A LENGTH OF 42 METERS. ON JUNE 3, 1743, SHE LEFT TEXEL IN NORTH HOLLAND BOUND ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE FOR THE DUTCH SETTLEMENT OF BATAVIA IN JAKARTA, INDONESIA. SHE CARRIED A LARGE AMOUNT OF TRADE COIN (129,700 GUILDERS WORTH!) FOR USE IN THE ORIENT AND A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT PASSENGERS, INCLUDING THE NEW GOVERNOR AND HIS FAMILY. ON THE 13th, THE SHIP WAS SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE FLEET. OFF COURSE AND IN UNUSUAL WATERS FOR A
    VOC
SHIP, PROBABLY DUE TO FOG OR A SUDDEN STORM,
    HOLLANDIA
STRUCK GUNNER ROCK, LOCATED OFF THE ISLE OF ANNET IN THE ISLES OF SCILLY, AN ARCHIPELAGO OFF THE SOUTHWEST OF TIP OF THE CORNISH PENINSULA. CAPTAIN JAN KELDER ORDERED THE CANNONS TO BE FIRED, BUT TO NO AVAIL, FOR THE ISLAND'S LOCALS WERE TO DISTANT TO ASSIST. SHE SANK NEARBY THE ROCK SHE HAD STRUCK, WITH THE LOSS OF 276 CREW PLUS THE PASSENGERS ABOARD.
GUNNER ROCK WAS PROBABLY NAMED AFTER THE EVENT, FROM THE FIRING OF
    HOLLANDIA'S
    CANNON.
THE WRECK WAS DISCOVERED BY LONDON ATTORNEY REX COWAN IN 1971. HIS SEARCH FOR
    HOLLANDIA
STARTED IN 1968, USING RESEARCH FROM ENGLISH AND DUTCH ARCHIVES AND MODERN SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT. THE SALVAGE YIELDED AROUND 14,000 COINS (BEFORE THE ATOCHA FIND CONSIDERED TO BE THE LARGEST HAUL OF THE MODERN ERA), BRONZE CANNONS AND MORTAR.
